Product Introduction
ObsidianIt is based onMarkdown fileoflocalKnowledge management software, and developers promise Obsidian for individual usersForever free. Obsidian was founded by Shida Li and Erica Xu during their quarantine period during the COVID-19 pandemic. Li and Xu met during their studies at the University of Waterloo and have collaborated on multiple development projects. Obsidian was initially released on March 30, 2020. Version 1.0.0 was released in October 2022. Version 1.1 added the Canvas core plugin and was released in December 2022.
Why build another note taking application Obsidian? Like a clich é, we started using Obsidian because Erica couldn’t find anything that could meet her needs for building a personal knowledge base. She has tried various software from TidlyWiki to TheBrain; Although there doesn’t feel anything wrong.
Although we refer to it as a personal knowledge base or your ‘second brain’, we also like to see it as an IDE for your notes. You can view an IDE as a powerful front-end that attempts to understand your code, such as where functions and variables are stored, what their types are, making it very easy to navigate the code and get suggestions as you type.
In this sense, for most current note taking applications, using notes feels like having nothing to doSyntax highlighting TheCode auto completionorIn the case of Git integrationWrite code. For decades, all programmers have taken it for granted. This is very sad, don’t you think? Today’s knowledge workers are constantly facing new challenges and they deserve better tools.
Yes, that’s why we built ‘another note taking application’ Obsidian.
Product advantages
Recently, by chance, while reading on WeChat, I came across a netizen who shared an Obsidian WeChat reading note synchronization plugin. With curiosity, I went to learn about Obsidian and could only say that I fell into a trap.
A brief summary of the advantages of Obsidian that I have seen (I have a relatively shallow understanding in a short period of time, but if there are experts who have seen it, they can supplement it):
1. Markdown+return to local.
The cloud does have its advantages, but the significance of returning to local storage is actually very important. Yuque supports local storage, but I personally feel that it is not very stable. Sometimes it may be affected when the network environment is poor, and the local storage format is not particularly universal. In addition, as long as your data and information are in the hands of others, there is no guarantee of 100% stability. Over the years, the fortunes of enterprises have changed, and impressions are an example of changing charging policies and forms. Microsoft’s products can be cut at will. Where will Alibaba’s products go? I won’t leave many comments. Obsidian is built on the basis of local markdown files. If you change your computer, you just need to copy the entire directory. You can also save and synchronize these files in your own way. I have synchronized a copy to GitHub, and Obsidian supports automatic synchronization through plugins.
There is a consensus among everyone that the format of markdown should last longer than most companies today. Even if Obsidian is declining in the future, there will still be alternatives to it. At this time, these very authentic markdown files can be seamlessly integrated. Another important significance of returning to the local area is that these knowledge, thoughts, and data are no longer just casually excerpted and uploaded. You should be as cautious in recording your thinking process and learning results as you were with those notebooks from your student days.
2. Dual chain methodology
This may be a contentious point, and I don’t want to elaborate too much. I have always believed in the saying that true learning relies on the activities and habits in the mind, and tools are the tools that carry these activities and habits, rather than putting the cart before the horse. Most of us are ordinary and may not have developed good study and thinking habits since childhood. It is not a bad thing to tinker with ourselves appropriately and come into contact with some methodologies. We just need to have a clear understanding of our gains and losses. Just like how I only introduced the concept of “dual chain” here, interested people will naturally search and think about how to use and view it with their own opinions.
Having roughly read the usage of many great masters, one cannot help but exclaim that the truly powerful ones are still people, not tools. Even if given the simplest txt and folder, they can still be organized in an orderly manner. The big shot who influences millions of people in the voting group may use a small paper notebook and a ballpoint pen as recording tools every day.
3. Plugin concept
With the popularity of Microsoft VSCode, custom plugins have also become very popular. Anything has two sides, too many and too rich plugins can lead to content diffusion and inability to focus on the knowledge itself; There are too few plugins, and some necessary requirements cannot be implemented. Therefore, other tools need to be used, and it is necessary to maintain an additional similar tool. Obsidian gives the impression of being very subtle and low-key in plugins. It’s not really urgent for you to use various plugins, but when you think of certain key points, you find that there is already very good support and it’s very useful. I am currently using the calendar plugin, diary plugin, and WeChat reading plugin from the community, which are very user-friendly and embody the essence of plugins. They are small yet beautiful.
